Below each of these specifications Dr Cloughley provides a long list of the individual fatty acids contained in the individual products mentioned, which I consider to be too technical to be of any real interest to the non-scientific reader.

I find it ironic when I think back to the times when I was ridiculed for my determination to prescribe remedies containing these oils for my patients. For exactly the same reasons that I insisted on prescribing them, they are now available on prescription in more than thirty countries. These remedies are used as nutritional supplements because of their richness in essential fatty acids and I am happy to see that these old and tried methods are making a comeback and are now widely acknowledged as being beneficial to people’s health. The safety of GLA and EPA as nutritional supplements has been tested since the early 1970s, both in Britain and abroad, without any indication of side effects.

Scientific researchers foresaw that in some circumstances a considerable advantage would be gained from GLA supplied directly to the body and the constituents of the oil, and their beneficial effects, must have influenced the good health of the early Maoris. Not only are these benefits obtained from the seeds of the evening primrose, but it is now known that blackcurrant and borage seeds contain similar properties, and this discovery is especially interesting because the Maoris also used borage seeds. Today, however, it is important to use these products carefully and only cold-pressed oil of the highest quality is recommended for use for the purposes under discussion. I find it fascinating that thirteen medical schools in Britain are presently involved in the research studies in this field and it has already been established that a high potency is sometimes necessary.

Evening primrose oil is thought to be an important ingredient that is metabolised by chemical messengers or hormone-like substances, which control different metabolic pathways. Human breast milk is one of the best-known sources of correctly balanced EPA and GLA and experts have been trying to find a more convenient source. To date, the evening primrose plant is still one of the richest known sources of GLA, from which the body produces vital prostaglandins, and its oil has now become a standard GLA supplement. Lamberts already provides some excellent products and I am currently involved in formulating certain remedies containing combinations of oils to help alleviate specific conditions.

The amazing oil of garlic – Allium sativum – is also currently the subject of extensive research. Although garlic capsules and tablets have been used for quite some time now, oil of garlic is also considered extremely useful for rheumatic conditions. Garlic oil is rich in vitamins B, C and D, as well as zinc, copper, sulphur and crotonic aldehyde. This last constituent plays an active role in destroying harmful bacteria, which are often one of the underlying causes of rheumatism and arthritis, and also delays degeneration and the ageing process.

Boericke, in the ninth edition of the Materia Medica, notes that
